The Nugget Gallery
1302 South Second
Gallup, NM 87301
This place is a classic and a must visit for any serious buyer. Excellent retail buying as well as wholesale. They have a good selection of old pawn and new Native American jewelry, besides an excellent pottery collection and an array of high quality Hopi and Zuni Kachinas. They generally have the best selection of Hopi products in town. Should I say more? No, it is best to await the delights of discovery when you visit our town, the Indian Jewelry Capital of the World as we like to say.
DESERT INDIAN TRADERS, INC.
1009 W. Historic Highway 66
Gallup, NM 87301
Desert Indian Traders is a favorite of wholesale buyers who come to Gallup from around the world. They have been in business since 1970. They buy directly from area artists and they employee in house artisans. You will find the work of many great artists including Effie Calavaza, Don Dewa, Calvin Begay, Sunshine Reeves, Alex Sanchea, and James McCabe to name just a few. They also have an outstanding retail showroom well worth the visit. Whether you are a dealer needing inventory or a solitary shopper this is one of the best stores to visit. Be sure to meet Sammi when you go.
RICHARSON'S TRADING COMPANY
222 West 66th Ave.
Gallup, NM 87301
Richardson's Trading Company is a nearly century old establishment in the center of the heart of the Indian Jewelry Capital of the world. Richard's has slowly expanded over the past several years. They now occupy almost 1/2 of a city block on the old Route 66. You cannot miss it when you drive through town on the famed on roadway. The exterior of the building is vibrant with graphics. Step inside and you will be treated to a museum quality overview of Southwest native arts. Start with their dead pawn holdings then look and look until you finally end up in their most impressive rug room loaded with enough tapestry treasures to trade for a kingdom complete with castle. You will find the staff friendly and knowledgeable. In all likelihood if you had a Native American treasure in mind you'll find it at Richardson's and whole lot more that you didn't know you wanted. Richardson's is definitely a trip. Indeed, at the conclusion of your visit you may well leave seeking redemption for knowing that "Thou hast coveted." One real precaution, however, if you find something you like, take a deep breath and resist pulling out cash or credit card. There are dozens of fine Indian Jewelry outlets in Gallup. You are likely to find the same piece or something comparable at another establishment. Richardson's tends to price on the comparatively high side, but keep in mind that may be reason enough to buy. You will be supporting the Native American Arts in good style because he is highly regarded among the artists. Why? They consistently report, "He treats us right."
JOE MILO'S WHITEWATER TRADING COMPANY
17 miles South of Gallup on Highway on Highway 602
Vanderwagen, NM 87326
Joe's trading post is the quintessential place to visit for Indian Jewelry. It is located beside the highway in an idyllic setting of pinyon and pine trees at an elevation of 7100 ft. a little less than midway between Gallup and the Pueblo of Zuni. Their building houses an active and historic US post office serving the community of Vanderwagen. Joe sells a full array of supplies for jewelry making and rug weaving. He also has an active pawn operation with a room full of pawned jewelry, rugs, blankets, rifles, powersaws, and saddles. Their retail show cases are loaded with quality products and for those who qualify to buy in wholesale volume they have a back room loaded with inventory. Joe's is only one of two outlets that we know of in the whole area where Tommy Singer brings in products. This trading post was established in the 1940's. Joe Milo started his career there as a young man in his early twenties sweeping the floor. Today he owns the whole operation. You will find the staff friendly and knowlegeable. So if you must be limited to only one visit, make it Joe Milo's even if it is a little off the Interstate.
NIZHONI TRADING COMPANY
1200 East Historic Highway 66
Gallup, NM 87301
This a very small operation, but one of our favorite places to visit. Carlos has been trading directly with the Zuni and Navajo for years. He takes in pride in having watched a number of their children grow up. He specializes in the lower end of the market. He frequently makes personal buying trips to the homes of many of the Zuni artisans. His retail display case and his wholesale room are both physically small but loaded with very well priced authentic Native American jewelry.
TWIN ROCKS TRADING POST
Bluff, Utah 84512
You can shop in Gallup, Zuni, Hopi, or a host of other interesting places in Indian territory, but the ambiance just never gets better than what you find just off the Northern edge of the Navajo reservation far from just about everything. Nestled in beauty below an awesome sandstone backdrop in Bluff, Utah you will find Twin Rocks Trading Post. The owner buys from Native Americans who bring in jewelry, rugs, pottery, and baskets. The selection is not as extensive as you will find at Joe Milo’s, Desert Indian Traders, or most of the other major outlets in the Gallup region, but the work is well selected and the prices are reasonable. They maintain one of the best commercial web pages in the Indian arts business: http://www.twinrocks.com/ . Bluff, Utah founded in 1880 founded in 1880 by the famous “Hole in the Rock” expedition of Mormon pioneers is a charming hamlet that offers reasonable lodging and outback dining options. If you are lucky enough to get that far out of the mainstream do not miss your chance to visit the Twin Rocks Trading Post.
